Autologous Protein Solution (APS)

What is APS?

Autologous Protein Solution (APS) is a non-surgical, single-injection treatment designed to address pain and inflammation associated with knee osteoarthritis (OA). This treatment uses the patient’s own blood, which is processed to create a concentrated solution of anti-inflammatory proteins. These proteins help counteract the damaging effects of inflammation and may slow the progression of cartilage degradation. This treatment is primarily intended for individuals with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis.

How the Process Works

The procedure involves drawing a small amount of blood, which is then processed over the course of 30 minutes to produce a 2-3 mL solution rich in white blood cells, platelets, and plasma proteins. This solution contains anti-inflammatory cytokines that help manage inflammation, along with growth factors that support cartilage health and potentially assist in tissue repair.

The injection is administered using ultrasound guidance, which helps ensure accurate placement of the solution directly into the knee joint for optimal effectiveness.

What to Expect During Recovery

The benefits of APS are typically seen over time. While the exact duration of relief varies between patients, many report noticeable improvement in pain and function within a few weeks, with relief lasting on average 6 to 12 months. However, it is important to note that results can differ, and for some patients, additional treatments may be necessary to maintain or improve results.
